I have not published anything for a while, but I’m not stopping my blog, I have just been very busy lately!
I have come back from a vacation and I brought back a very particular souvenir… Meet Leon (in the honor of Leon Gauthier, one of our liberators), I found him in Normandy, in my parents garden. He was abandoned by his mother and was suffering from Coryza.
We nursed and bottle fed him and now he is doing great. We thought about finding him a nice home (we were not going to send him off to a rescue center or into the wild) because we already had a cat and the idea of having a second one was not an option, especially since we live in an appartment, but as it was predictable we grew attached to the little fur ball… I’m crazy when it comes to odors and hygiene and although we love our animals, we don’t want to sacrifice our interior for them and we are not really cat trees fans. So for those who are not quite decided on adopting a cat or who already have cats, here are some links, advice and products that work for me.
1) Concernant la litière / The litter and litter box issue
I still wonder how I managed to have an open box for years, as a matter of fact I thought my cat would never go for it as it could have reminded her of her cage. A closed box is not only great for retaining odors but it also avoids bad suprises in the morning like a poop that ended on the floor after the cat played football with it or a pee when the cat missed the box and of course all the little pebbles that come out of the box. I have a box for each cat and I get rid of the poop everyday and change the whole thing every two days. I have had a CAT IT litter box for the past 6 years and I’m very satisfied with it.
Le ramasse crotte/ The poopa scoopa.
If there is one product that I would strongly recommend, it would be the United Pets poopa scoopa, so much more hygienic than the regular thing you leave on the floor. I buy my items from United Pets on sale on the website Vente Privée.
La litière/ The litter
Je vais bientôt essayer le bicarbonate de sodium./ Unfortunately in France we don’t have a lot of choice when it comes to cat litter. Let’s face it, high end cat litters don’t make miracles regarding smells but I did find a small difference between them and the middle range like Friskies. I don’t use deodorizers, I think they make things worse. I will try baking soda in a near future.
Le tapis à litière/ The litter mat
Il retient une bonne partie des pierres quand le chat sort de sa litière./ It will hold a big part of the litter when your cat comes out of the box.
./ Even if your cat is clean, remember not to tempt the devil, at first keep them away from your sheep skin rugs, or for that matter any kind of long furry rugs, don’t leave your shower rug or dirty laundry on the floor.
The ideal sofa for cats, if only it were real…
I didn’t want a cat tree and scratchers all over the place, and I must admit that I did a bad job at training my eldest cat. You can’t stop a cat from exploring and scratching so as a result I have had bedsprings ruined, as well as sofas and carpets. Luckily, there are some grat tutorials like Catmantoo’s (in english) and today there are some pretty nice alternatives to cat trees on the internet.

Et bien sûr vous pouvez faire le plein d’idées sur Pinterest./ And of course you can find a lot of ideas on Pinterest.
For those who don’t like to leave their cats outside unattended, I have discovered Julia’s blog, who is German and lives the States, she is crazy about interior design and cats and has come up with this great solution for her kitties.
Voici son beau blog/ Here is her great blog: http://www.cuckoo4design.com
It is a cat enclosure where cats can come straight out of her window through a cat door.
For more details on the cat cat enclosure, here is the link to the article: http://www.cuckoo4design.com/2012/05/cuckoo-for-my-cats.html
Enfin, si vous voulez casser votre tirelire, voici quelques indispensables du design felin./ And finally, if you feel like splurging on some designer items, here are some feline designer must haves:
The Tigrito from Alessi, it looks really great in a kitchen but I don’t find it quite practical for changing the water (even if you can take out the metalic bowls.)
The United Pets food mats, not only do they come in a variety of colors and smell good but they are very thick and non-slip.
This litter box seems to take up quite a lot of space but its design is funny and it’s made in France!
You don’t necessarly have to buy very expensive things for them, there are plenty of DIY ideas out there and objects that you can transform. As for a cat scratcher, I was thinking about wrapping something original with rope.
